IF YOU LOVE motorsport, it's a great time of year.

The 2016 MotoGP World Championship starts April 01 with the Round-3 Spain.

But the excitement starts this weekend (April 01-03) with the Round-3 Spain World Superbikes Championship, live from the free-flowing Ciudad del Motor de Aragón.

For fans, it's the start of a new season, a clean slate for your favourite team, and so much possibility ahead.

But if you haven't yet fallen in love with the roar of a 1000CC Superbike, then this is the year to get on board.

2016 is shaping to be the best year ever in WorldSBK, and here are the reasons why.

1. These are real bikes

Unlike MotoGP, the Superbikes in WorldSBK are race-tuned versions of four-stroke street bikes available to the public.

If you see the Ducati 1198 winning, you can go out and buy it tomorrow.

2. The Island

There is no better place to race, or to watch racing.

Fast, free cornering, dramatic changes in topography, wonderful Victorian coastline, a 330km/h straight, and the highest average speed of any track on the calendar.

What a way to start things off.

3.  The close finishes

Wall love close racing. Where some motorsport categories suffer from a lack of tight tussles, WorldSBK excels.

Wheel-to-wheel racing and nail-biting final laps; it’s all part of the WorldSBK circus, and Phillip Island historically provides the closest of any round.

4.  The Aussies

It won’t just be Americans and Europeans on the podium this year.

Australia has two big contenders for race honours in 2016, with Taree native Josh Hook in his rookie year with Grillini Kawasaki, and big hope Josh Brookes aboard a Milwaukee BMW.

5.  Big names

There are plenty this time around.

The ‘Kentucky Kid’ Nicky Hayden joins the fray for the first time after 216 MotoGP starts and one world championship, with Czech rider Karel Abraham and Italian veteran Alex de Angelis also making the switch.

They join 2015 Champ Johnathan Rea in a field of 24 riders from 11 countries, representing 7 manufacturers.
